Summary
After awaking from a car crash, Elizabeth (Beth) discovered that her mother had passed away and she was an orphan in an orphanage. In the basement of the orphanage, she encountered the custodian, Mr. Shaibel. He was playing chess by himself and she was captivated by the black and white board. Beth began to play….
1) prodigy and madness: According to one of the characters in her life, being extremely gifted was on the same path of madness. Beth, herself, also questioned if her mother had suffered from mental illness. Being extremely focused on chess made her overly dependent on tranquilizers to calm herself down. Incidentally, the orphanage was the place she first began using them.
2) life lessons: Beth’s life really began at 9 years old when she began to play chess. Because of chess, she learned that even though she though she could win everyone, one mistake would cause her to fail. She would learn to get up and face her fears, like a rollercoaster.
Conclusion
Watching Beth grow up from a little girl to a young woman all by herself was very uplifting and refreshing. Dealing with her difficulties face on requires a enormous amount of bravery. She is one fierce character!
Fun Fact: Harry Melling, who played Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter series, also played Beth’s first official win, Harry Beltik!
I loved this!! ♟👍😊
