The Silk Road: Gobi Desert

Back in 2005, a group of families and friends gathered together and booked a tour bus for ourselves to travel along the infamous Silk Road.

The Gobi Desert

The Gobi desert is found in the Northern part of China and southern part of Mongolia.

This vast desert played a big part in the history of the Silk Road.

“The Silk Road derives its name from the lucrative trade in silk carried out along its length, beginning in the Han dynasty in China (207 BCE–220 CE). The Han dynasty expanded the Central Asian section of the trade routes around 114 BCE through the missions and explorations of the Chinese imperial envoy Zhang Qian, as well as several military conquests.The Chinese took great interest in the security of their trade products, and extended the Great Wall of China to ensure the protection of the trade route.“—Wikipedia

This was the first time that I rode on a camel! After the ride, each of us got to slide down the side of the hill on a sled. I recalled that even with my sunglasses on and face mask, the sand was everywhere!

The Flaming Cliffs

This area of the desert was where they discovered many dinosaur fossils. The sandstone cliffs looked like they were on fire; hence the nickname.
