Movie Review: Mulan 2020

Despite all the controversies and disputes regarding this movie, our family decided to watch “Mulan”. Being Asian and a fan of the original Mulan animation, I knew there would be many positive and negative aspects of this adaptation……But, no spoilers here!

Who Was The Legendary Mulan?

Hua Mulan (Chinese: 花木兰, Chinese: 花木蘭) was a folk heroine from the Northern and Southern dynasties (4th to 6th century AD) of Chinese history. According to the legend, Mulan takes her aged father’s place in the conscription for the army by disguising herself as a man. After prolonged and distinguished military service against nomadic hordes beyond the northern frontier, Mulan is honored by the emperor but declines a position of high office. She retires to her hometown, where she is reunited with her family and reveals her gender, much to the astonishment of her comrades.“—- Wikipedia

The ballad draws to a close with Mulan offering a metaphor: “The male hare has heavy front paws. The female hare tends to squint. But when they are running side-by-side close to the ground, who can tell me which is male or female?”—- Wikipedia

Themes

1) inequality : Women were expected to be obedient wives. They were suppose to be quiet and mindless beings of the household. Mulan was highly skilled in the martial arts and spoke her mind, which was frowned upon.

2) family: Everything circled around the family name. Mulan didn’t want her elderly father to fight in the war. There was no way that he was going to survive…So, she went in his place.

Snapshots From The Movie

I love Donnie Yen! His martial skills are amazing.

Gong Li was one of my favourite actresses since I was young. Her costumes were gorgeous!

Conclusion

There are a few things that I do miss in this adaptation, but I appreciate that this movie did have an all-Asian cast, featuring Jet Li, Gong Li and my favourite, Donnie Yen.

  1. Excellent perspective Chocoviv

It was incredible flick the one character I missed was Mishu but her empowerment as Warrior not to be denied her right of passage to not be the guardian Protector of her family’s Honour.

Knowing that she was willing to sacrifice herself for Honour and knowing if they knew the truth punishment was death.

Still Mulan would not bow to dictatorship and tyranny of Men

Just like the legendary Norwegian Shield Maiden she became both feared and respected.

  2. I love the original version of this film but having heard so many problematic things about this I’m not sure whether to watch it or not. It’s great you could still pick up some strong central themes to it.
