Craving Sweetness, But Sugar-free

As a mother, I try my very best to be a good example and each less sweets. It’s difficult as I love chocolate.

Growing up as a chocoholic was painful as there was no sugar free versions out there. The only sugar substitute that was popular back then was aspartame! Not for me!

Stevia To The Rescue

Finally, during my last year of university, I had to study about this exact substance- stevia.

“Stevia is a sweetener and sugar substitute derived from the leaves of the plant species Stevia rebaudiana, native to Brazil and Paraguay. The active compounds are steviol glycosides, which have 30 to 150 times the sweetness of sugar, are heat-stable, pH-stable, and not fermentable.“—Wikipedia

Back then, there wasn’t much products for me to try out. Now, I even have sweeteners to use with my coffee, tea and Sodastream! Awesome! In addition, this company is a small Canadian business. They also carry erythritol, too!

“Erythritol is a natural sweetener, sometimes referred to as sugar alcohol. It is found naturally in various plants like corn, fruits and even mushrooms. Erythritol contains virtually no calories. In fact it has 95% less calories than table sugar, and a very low glycemic impact. Plus it does not contribute to tooth decay, making this sweetener the ideal choice for a healthy lifestyle.” —Crave Stevia

(I even told me baking friends about these sugar free chocolate chips!)
