Carving A Path In Cambodia

Ankor Wat

On my last part of my 2007 Southeast Asia trip, Cambodia was my final destination. I had only known about Ankor Wat from photographs. And yes, I saw it in Angelina Jolie’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider!

According to Wikipedia, “Angkor Wat ( Khmer: អង្គរវត្ត, “City/Capital of Temples”) is a temple complex in Cambodia and is the largest religious monument in the world….Originally constructed as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu for the Khmer Empire, it was gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple towards the end of the 12th century. It was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Yaśodharapura (Khmer: យសោធរបុរៈ, present-day Angkor), the capital of the Khmer Empire, as his state temple and eventual mausoleum. Breaking from the Shaiva tradition of previous kings, Angkor Wat was instead dedicated to Vishnu. As the best-preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious centre since its foundation. The temple is at the top of the high classical style of Khmer architecture. It has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag, and it is the country’s prime attraction for visitors.”

I was so impressed and in awe of the beautiful trees that had its roots embedded into the stone structure. The structures and carvings were unbelievable! The beauty of the carvings on the walls were still very clear.

Standing up close, but not touching any of the stone carvings, I was able to slowly admire the artistic work.

In order to see the magnificent temple in its ultimate beauty, we had to wake up before the break of dawn. After admiring the sun rising, we continued to venture up many flights of stairs to visit the different parts of the temple.

Local Delicacy?

Honestly, I didn’t remember much about what I ate that stood out. Every thing was paid in US dollars….. The one street food that I remembered buying were a bag of deep-fried spicy crickets! I actually enjoyed them…. little did I know that crickets would be a source of protein now!

Prince D’Ankor Hotel and Spa

Located in Siem Riep, Prince D’Ankor Hotel and Spa was where I stayed during my trip. According to my memory, it was a grand hotel and was nice and tidy. There was a nice gift shop that I bought some cute bags to travel with too!

There was a huge swimming pool to hang out at and the frogs there agree too!
