Venturing to Vietnam

Back in 2007, I took a risk. No one in my family had ever been to this part of Asia. My feelings were quite mixed up. But, I did it.

Vietnam

I really didn’t know what to expect. All I knew about Vietnam was the food that I have eaten at home. The weather was humid and hot.

The seafood was very fresh. There were so many types of seafood that I have never seen or eaten before….

Cruising on Ha Long Bay

Cruising on a junk boat… what an experience! We got to sleep and eat on this beautiful boat. Vendors would paddle up to our boat to sell us seafood that the crew cooked for us as our dinner.

From our boat, we took a small boat to visit the Hang Sung Sot Cave, which was situated in this UNESCO Heritage Site. The Sung Sot Cave was the largest cave in this area.

Back On Land

There was so much fresh seafood everywhere….Even the street food carts were selling seafood!

Drinking coconut water was my favourite memory as it cost a fraction of what I would pay for at home….

Củ Chi Tunnels

The Củ Chi Tunnels were used back in the days to hide, travel and ambush enemies. The openings of the doorways and paths were so tiny!

“The tunnels of Củ Chi are an immense network of connecting tunnels located in the Củ Chi District of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam, and are part of a much larger network of tunnels that underlie much of the country. The Củ Chi tunnels were the location of several military campaigns during the Vietnam War, and were the Viet Cong‘s base of operations for the Tết Offensive in 1968.

The tunnels were used by Viet Cong soldiers as hiding spots during combat, as well as serving as communication and supply routes, hospitals, food and weapon caches and living quarters for numerous North Vietnamese fighters. The tunnel systems were of great importance to the Viet Cong in their resistance to American forces, and helped to counter the growing American military effort.” –Wikipedia

Vietnam gave me a lot of wonderful memories and experiences. I would love to visit again someday…..

  3. Wow, I love the pictures! I’ve always wanted to visit, and now I want to go even more! The food pics look delicious, and the idea of fresh seafood is very tempting. Thanks for taking me on a tour of Vietnam with you (at least vicariously).

    I recognized your first photo of Ha Long Bay right away.

    Because when I lived in Vancouver, there used to be a Vietnamese restaurant on West Pender Street that I ate at quite a bit called the Ha Long Bay Restaurant.

    So I recognized Ha Long Bay from the photos in that restaurant. 🙂

    That photo of the fish you have there looks like a garoupa fish.

    I remember one of the restaurants I used to eat at in Edmonton with my parents served Sweet and Sour Garoupa fish (delicious!) and I rememeber the fish we ate was that shape.
