My Weight and I
I have always had issues with my weight. Growing up, I was one of those girls who matured a bit early than the others and was a bit more muscular too. Taking ballet lessons was fine as long as I had my lessons alone, but not when I was watching the graceful and thin girls from other studios. I felt like the overweight ugly duckling in a sea of swans. This feeling of disgust stayed with me till this very day.
For awhile, I was a bit more comfortable in my own skin in my twenties. I was dating, going to clubs with friends, going to university and working part-time, but in the back of my head, I felt obese. No matter what the scale said, I felt fat. I just couldn’t get that horrid idea out of my head. Luckily, I worked as a health consultant in the health food industry, so I knew I had to follow some healthy ideas for maintaining a healthy weight. Therefore, I knew I wasn’t overweight at all.
Fast forward to the time after my babies….I was and felt morbidly obese. I had breastfed two babies till 14 months and my BMI was higher than I would like. My self esteem was super low, but I worked to cheer myself up by focusing on my children and work. The weight was not going down at all, but I really took care to be healthy and my skin glowed.
Summary
“Brittany Runs A Marathon” was loosely based on the director’s friend’s journey to her marathon. It began with her waking up late for work because of a late night partying with her condescending and toxic roommate. After watching a home video of her deceased father, she decided to visit a walk-in doctor for a check-up. Her physical examination was not looking good. Doctor said she must lose 50 pounds!
Themes
1) The grass is always greener on the other side: Brittany was always looking at the people around her and only seeing the glamourous side of her roommate’s social media life or the lovely apartments of her landlady. She did not see how her roommate’s teacher assistant career was at a standstill and that her landlady was having family problems.
2) Life is complicated and has ups and downs: Brittany believed that her whole life would be perfect as soon as she loses all the weight. She discovered that that was not true.
3) Learn to set boundaries and when to open yourself: Brittany learned who her real friends were and who weren’t. Very often, people that we might think are our friends, aren’t really our friends. On the contrary, people that we might dislike at first, might turn out to be our real friends.
Yay or Nay

It’s an absolute YAY!! I laughed and cried through the whole movie. And so was the rest of the theatre. I would love to watch it again with all my mommy friends. To be honest, we all need a bit of cheering up and validation from our fellow girls!
I hadn’t heard of this film before, it seems like it might be worth checking out. Thanks for sharing your story and review

I struggled hugely with body image too growing up – in part because I was taught that I should say someone was big and not that someone was fat….so when people commented on how big I was, or Mum told me I was too big to have ballet classes….I translated that to fat in my head.
I was also very tall for my age until I was 13 and stopped growing (and everyone else caught up) so in hindsight it’s likely that people were commenting on my height rather than my weight, but that damage lives on.
Thanks for highlighting this film. I’m glad you enjoyed it!

I still deal with being called fat till this day… people think it’s ok to talk about my size in front of me… I mean, I am not longer the same size as I was 20 years ago! How shocking !
